NHS Long Term Plan Comment

In response to the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan, Derek Caren, Chief Executive of Richmond Fellowship said:

We welcome the focus on mental ill health in the long term funding plan. Currently, there is massive pressure on facilities with the result that many people are not getting the help they need quickly enough or near enough to their families and friends.

For example, only last week, a woman in one of our crisis services who needed to be accommodated under the Mental Health Act had to go over 300 miles away from home to get a bed.

We hope that this plan will result in a real step change in the way mental health services are viewed and resourced.

Isle of Wight Opens New Mental Health Community Safe Haven

The first Isle of Wight Community Safe Haven service has been launched in Newport.  The service, which will initially run as a one-year pilot, has been developed in response to community feedback as part of the work to look at redesigning health and care services last year under the My Life a Full Life new care model. Crisis House opens its doors in Lancashire

National mental health charity Richmond Fellowship, part of Recovery Focus, has opened a new service in Lancashire to provide support to people experiencing a mental health crisis.

Willow House, a crisis house in the Chorley village of Coppull, provides short term placements for people experiencing a mental health crisis as an alternative to hospital admission and is being run in partnership with the NHS. Read more →

Bristol employment service rewarded for excellence

bmh_employmentOur Bristol based employment service has gone above and beyond in supporting people with mental health problems to stay in work as well as supporting job seekers.

The Bristol Mental Health Employment Service (BMHES) provides employment services to people living with mental health problems.

In the last six months of 2015, the NHS commissioned service doubled the number of people they’d supported into competitive work whilst maintaining a quick response to all new users of the service. Read more →

Mental health cafe scoops NHS award

A charity run café which aims to tackle mental health stigma in Blackpool has won a prestigious NHS award barely ten months since its doors opened.

Sparky’s, the pioneering social café run by Richmond Fellowship, the national charity making mental health recovery reality, took top prize for the NHS in the North West Excellence in Supply Awards 2015.

The award comes thanks to Sparky’s work in tackling mental health stigma and providing opportunities for people living with mental health problems to gain the confidence and skills to return to work through volunteering and apprenticeships.

Old Moat community garden centre outlines expansion plans

The Old Moat - GreenhouseOur community garden centre that supports people living with mental health problems in Surrey is set to unveil its expansion plans.

The Old Moat Garden Centre in Epsom has set its sights on expansion in order to make the enterprise self sustaining following a reduction in funding from the NHS.

The Old Moat has operated in Epsom since 2008 and offers people living with mental health problems employment and training opportunities where they play an active role in the management and operation of the successful site.

Richmond Fellowship and NHS team up to run recovery college

Arch Recovery College, Durham

Richmond Fellowship has teamed up with the local NHS Trust in Durham to expand the range of courses on offer at the recovery college to educate people in Durham about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding it.

The two organisations are expanding the range of courses on offer at the highly successful Arch Recovery College as well as increasing the number of programmes being delivered at other sites to support people in the rural community.

National Alliance of Voluntary Sector Mental Health Providers

Richmond Fellowship’s crisis care services narrowly missed out on a national award following the launch of services in Leicestershire and West Sussex.

The Mental Health Provider’s Forum (MHPF) voluntary sector awards recognise achievement across the mental health sector and Richmond Fellowship’s Crisis services were shortlisted in the crisis care category.

Christine Lawrence, locality manager for Richmond Fellowship in Leicestershire attended the awards lunch today to represent us.

She said: “We’re obviously disappointed to miss out on the award. To even be nominated for such a prestigious award shows how well our crisis services have been doing and the importance of this support.”
