Seeking the next generation of volunteers

Volunteers in action - could you join them?

We’re appealing for people to volunteer their time to support people living with mental health problems at an open event in Huddersfield.

Richmond Fellowship, part of Recovery Focus, the national group of mental health and substance misuse charities, are calling on people to volunteer their time to support people living with mental health problems in Huddersfield and Kirklees.

The open day will give prospective volunteers the chance to meet the team at Richmond Fellowship and learn more about the vital services they provide to people in the area.

Joe Redmond, managing director for Richmond Fellowship (north), said: “We’re looking for volunteers who want to make a difference to the lives of people living with mental health problems and we actively encourage people with experiences of mental ill health to get involved and use their journey to support others.

“We pride ourselves on co-producing services with the people we support and we need innovative volunteers to help us grow our work in the area and make a real difference. If this is you, please come along to our open day to find out more.”

Paul Tipping was receiving support from Richmond Fellowship following mental health problems. Having been supported in the community, Paul was encouraged by the team to volunteer for Richmond Fellowship and use his experiences to support others.

“About 12 months ago Dan my advisor at the time asked whether I would consider becoming a volunteer tutor for Richmond Fellowship. I was extremely nervous, although my background was as a teacher it had been some years since I was in a classroom

“I needn’t have worried. With the support of the team I was soon leading sessions and helping to plan them.

“It is strange to reflect that as little as two years ago I felt that although my life and illness had improved I felt I would never work again. Now I am contemplating new challenges and am hopeful of working with Richmond Fellowship to help other people regain work.

“I can honestly say that without the support provided by Richmond Fellowship advisors my life would not be as satisfying as it is now.”

The volunteer open day takes place on Thursday, 12 November at Queensgate Market, Huddersfield between 10:00am and 3:00pm.

We’re looking for volunteers across the country to support the work we do and help us campaign against mental health stigma and social isolation. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, learn skills and make a real difference to people’s lives. Find out more here
