We’re tackling disability employment stigma

group-photo-with-daniel-zeichner-mpOur Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire employment services tackled the stigma surrounding disability, mental health and employment at a disability confidence event hosted by local MPs, Heidi Allen and Daniel Zeichner.

The event showcased how disabled people make a positive contribution to business success and challenged negative attitudes to disability and employment.

It also highlighted the range of support available for employers in both employing and retaining an employee with a heath issue or disability.

Jude Tustian, team leader for Cambridge Employment Service, said:

“We were delighted to host a stand at such an important event.
“Our team were able to share information on the assistance we offer locally and also our positive vision about working towards a society that values everyone with mental health problems
“Furthermore, the event provided an opportunity to promote the fact that we are now working with adults with Autism  or Asperger’s  that require support in gaining employment or advice on job retention including return to work plans.”

Stephen Smith-Trask, managing director for Richmond Fellowship (south), said:

“Events like this are a fantastic opportunity for us to challenge the stigma around disability and mental health. When you look beyond a diagnosis you can see a fantastic candidate that will be a great asset to any organisation.
“By working with other organisations and members of Parliament we’re reminding businesses and candidates that the support is available to help them in work.”
