Positive risk taking conquers Scafell Pike!
Service Users and Staff members from Hounslow Services put theory into practice recently as they conquered the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike. The team, led by Service Manager Sylvester Nzekwue, consulted, planned and finally embarked on an eight hour coach journey to Cumbria. They then walked eight miles through rocky terrain passing through valleys and shallow lakes, with panoramic views of the hills and mountains.
The activity risk assessment, risk management plan and contingency plans were fully tested and applied as the hardy group soldiered on, supporting and encouraging each other. The team's approach was based on systematic self centred flexible planning which allowed each person to decide the level of pace and how far he individually wanted to climb. The group assessed and evaluated the challenge at set levels and checked if anyone wanted to drop out. No one did, and after a four hour climb the whole party scaled the summit of the 978 metre mountain!
Hounslow Services demonstrated that if an effective plan is in place, backed up with determination and positive risk taking well researched and measured, inspirational positive outcomes can be achieved. Well done Hounslow Services!
